Rethinking functional safety and plant availability – digital, practical, future-oriented
01

The transformation of functional safety
With increasing digitalization, tightened safety regulations, and growing complexity in the process industry, traditional testing and maintenance concepts are reaching their limits. Traditional methods are often complex, error-prone, and difficult to scale.
What's needed is a digital, holistic approach to the entire security lifecycle – one that combines efficiency, transparency, and standards-compliant work. This is precisely where the development of the mobile SLD demonstrator comes in:
It makes digital functional safety tangible everywhere and shows in a practical way how modern safety concepts can be implemented.

02
The SLD demonstrator as a mobile operating system for functional safety
The aim of the project is to create an integrated working environment that digitally maps the entire safety lifecycle – from the functional safety workspace to automated proof tests and complete documentation.
Core objectives
-
Maximum transparency in planning, execution and analysis
-
Complete traceability and data availability
-
Significantly reduced effort while minimizing errors
-
Greater efficiency through digitalized processes
03

Diversity of expertise for a groundbreaking system
Five companies are pooling their expertise to create the modular, interoperable platform for functional safety:
Key lead:
Samson | SLD Demo Owner
Endress+Hauser | Process Measurement Technology
Pepperl+Fuchs | Ex-protected components
HIMA Group | Functional Safety Workspace & automated proof testing
MESALOGIC as supporting technology service provider:
As an external Technology Solutions Provider, MESALOGIC supported the HIMA Group in the implementation – with technological know-how and the goal of making complex lifecycle processes digitally and intuitively representable.

04

Proof test – automatically prove security
The heart of the system is automated proof testing – an innovation that makes the regular testing of safety-relevant devices more efficient, secure, and traceable:
-
Automatic inspection orders based on unique tags
-
Clear scheduling & responsibilities
-
Tests directly in the system – on-site or remotely
Benefits for operators
-
Significantly less effort for recurring inspections
-
Minimizing human errors
-
Immediate reaction to deviations
-
Audit-compliant traceability at the touch of a button

05
MESALOGIC GmbH: Making technology tangible
We, MESALOGIC GmbH, as an external technology service provider, helped shape the digital implementation of the project – particularly in the areas of visualization and data integration.
Intelligent filtering and sorting functions give operators quick access to critical information. At the same time, all data flows consistently into the lifecycle system – ready for analysis, audits, and strategic optimization.

06
From demo to practice
The demonstrator is currently being tested in several pilot projects in real-world plant environments. In parallel, the HIMA Group's "Functional Safety Workout" format offers a platform for knowledge transfer – directly from practice for operators, inspectors, planners, and safety engineers.
Demo becomes vivid practice – and digitalization becomes tangible benefits.
